Pittsburgh Steelers 2015 Mock Draft

Since the Steelers’ dismantling at the hands of the Browns last Sunday, every Steelers fan I know has been looking forward to the draft in order to find hope. If the Black and Gold does somehow pull it together and make the playoffs then great, but right now it looks much more likely that they finish 6-10 and pick in the top 15. That’s what I’m assuming here. The Steelers finish 6-10 and end up picking in the 8, 9, 10 trio of picks, since I predict they will end up tied at 6-10 with the Browns and Jets. Here we go!

FYI: This draft comes with the assumption that Dick LeBeau will no longer be the defensive coordinator and a 4-3 scheme is installed in the Burgh.

Round 1: Pick 10(10)

The Pick: Randy Gregory, Edge, Nebraska

Yes, yes, yes. I know the defense needs a cornerback in the worst way. But if they switch to a 4-3 they will need a left defensive end even worse. By this point I suspect that the only 4-3 left end prospect that I have rated higher than Gregory right now, Dante Fowler, will be gone. Gregory, however, is an extremely nice consolation prize. He did have a knee injury right before this season that required a scope, but he’s been on a tear ever since returning. He still has some work to do as a run defender but is already a very good pass rusher, and nowhere near his potential. He would be very good on the opposite side of the line as Jason Worilds. An interior featuring Steve McLendon and Cam Heyward wouldn’t be too shabby either.

Round 2: Pick 9(41)

The Pick: Alex Carter, CB, Stanford

Hmm, a corner that can cover in man or zone and defend the run, sounds good to me. It doesn’t hurt that he hails from my high school, either. Carter has improved every year while at Stanford and has the frame/raw abilities to be a good pro. It may not be ideal to have Carter as your #1 corner for his first year or two in the pros, but they will either have the ability to take a corner in the first in 2016 or wait for Carter to blossom into a top guy. Carter has the chance to be a very good pro, but at the least he’ll be a beast in the slot.

Round3. Pick 8(73)

The Pick: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon

Fisher is another guy that has been hurt this season but if he can stay healthy once he gets to the pros he shouldn’t have many problems becoming a starter or at the least a very good rotational lineman. Kelvin Beachum is a bit height and length restricted for a left tackle and he would surely make a better guard. At 6’6″, Fisher doesn’t have that problem. He probably won’t be able to start immediately, but he has enough potential to think that he should be able to eventually.

Round 4: Pick 10(106)

The Pick: Devonte Fields, Edge, TCU

A switch to the 4-3 would mean the Steelers would be in need of at least one back up defensive end to go along the starter they need. Devonte Fields has the talent that should make him a starter, not a backup in his rookie year. But that’s what happens when you get arrested and dismissed from your school. Getting Fields here would be a gift from the heavens with his talent level and the Steelers aren’t good enough to be picky and choosy about passing up that talent in the fourth round.

Round 5: Pick 9(137)

The Pick: Rory Anderson, TE, South Carolina

Heath Miller’s contract isn’t expiring for another few years but the Steelers’ backup tight ends are atrocious. They really need to add more depth.

Round 6: Pick 8(168)

The Pick: Adrian Amos, S, Penn State

Will Allen is too old too warrant another one year deal. Plus Troy Polamalu is getting up there and Mike Mitchell is awful. I think all those things warrant spending a pick on a safety.

Round 7: Pick 10(202)

The Pick: Chuckie Keeton, QB, Utah State

There’s absolutely no reason that Keeton should still be available in the 7th round, but that’s what happens when your past two season are ended by knee injuries.
