Jarvis Jones watching James Harrison
When Joey Porter was brought in as a defensive assistant this offseason, it was assumed that he would be playing the role of mentor for the Steelers last year first-round pick linebacker Jarvis Jones. Now that James Harrison is back where he belongs, he has become a mentor to the injured linebacker as well, as Mike Prisuta explains. Jones is on the IR-designated to return list and is eligible to return to practice now but is still recovering from a fractured wrist suffered in the Carolina game. In the meantime, he’s taking notes on how it’s down by Harrison.
"“I see some of the stuff he writes down (in meetings) and I take heed to that. If he’s writing it down then I need to write it down, too. It must be important. I pick up little things from him, the way he takes notes, the way he approaches his work in the building, on the field. Just the little things, different techniques he uses, I just pay attention to a lot of it.” – Jarvis Jones"
Turning over a new leaf
Ed Bouchette is full of interesting nuggets this week as he now reminds us, if you hadn’t noticed a difference in the Steelers defense so far this season as opposed to the past few seasons; they’re actually generating turnovers now. In the first four games of the season the Steelers forced three turnovers. Over the last five games they have 10. Not only that, they have two pick-sixes and the offense is turning those turnovers into points themselves. The increase comes from practice. Apparently they’re working on getting picks and causing fumbles in practice and it is surely paying off on the field. Keep at it guys.
Stopping Vick
The New York Jets have sent Geno Smith to the bench while they’re in the midst of their current 8-game losing streak and have turned to Michael Vick to lead them back into relevance. Ralph N. Paulk from the Trib explains that Vick is still a threat to teams with his elusiveness and athleticism. Vick has a 1-1-1 record in his career against the Steelers. The tie game was from a 2002 game when he played for the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons scored 17 points to force overtime and Plaxico Burress was stopped a yard short of the endzone for the final play of overtime. Man that was a frustrating game. Still, the whole point of emphasis this week for the Steelers has to be to ensure to not take Vick or the Jets lightly.
