Pittsburgh Steelers Release LeGarrette Blount

That didn’t take very long. Less than a few hours from seemingly storming off of the field during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Monday Night Football victory over the Tennessee Titans, running back LeGarrette Blount could very well be storming out of the South Side facilities, with locker contents in hand. The team announced early Tuesday afternoon that they released the fifth-year running back on their website with an accompanying quote from head coach Mike Tomlin.

"“We believe the decision to release LeGarrette is in the best interest of the organization and wish him the best of luck.” – Mike Tomlin"

Blount was a free agent signing this March and has played in all of the games so far in 2014 but saw very few snaps due to the emergence of Le’Veon Bell as one of the league’s top running backs.

The two running backs were actually arrested together during the preseason prior to leaving for a trip to play the Philadelphia Eagles. Le’Veon Bell was cited with DUI and both were cited for marijuana possession. Both reportedly received internal punishment from the team but nothing was handed down officially by the league for the incident yet.

The move seems rather shocking considering that even though Le’Veon Bell doesn’t give anyone any reason to worry about the state of the Steelers running game, behind him the team is very thin. Dri Archer was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2014 NFL Draft to be a hybrid running back/wide receiver/kick returner specialist and hasn’t really contributed much in the way of any of those roles so far this season.

It should be interesting to see where the Steelers go from here as far as picking up an additional back for the roster. They’re officially on their bye week and will return to action at home against the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 30th.
