The NFL offseason has officially begun and as we prepare for combines, free agency, and the draft Steelers season never officially ends. We’ll be busy looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold so we’ve got you covered. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Tuesday, Feb. 10th.

Cornerbacks before free agency

Bob Labriola took an in-depth look at the Steelers cornerbacks on the roster prior to the start of the free agency period which begins on March 10th. The Steelers have seven total cornerbacks on the roster with two of them becoming unrestricted free agents; Brice McCain and Ike Taylor. Antwon Blake will be a restricted free agent.

Labriola suggests the 2015 season will be a “do-or-die” season for Cortez Allen, who signed a contract extension prior to the start of the 2014 season and then proceeded to have his worst season of his career and eventually ended up on the injured/reserved list.

Allen has only shown flashes of capability and has yet to put together a season of consistency. It’s unlikely the Steelers will give up on him so quickly after signing him to an extension but I’m inclined to agree with Labriola that this upcoming season will make or break Allen’s future with the Steelers.

Quarterbacks

Now’s the time of the year to look over the roster before the draft and free agency period begins and ESPN’s Scott Brown took a look at the quarterback position for the Steelers. Obviously the Steelers have one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Ben Roethlisberger and all of Steeler Nation is impatiently waiting the announcement of his contract extension.

Behind Roethlisberger there is Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones. Not much to worry about with Roethlisberger as your quarterback, realistically. If all of his limbs are still attached, he’s staying in the game and playing next week. But, the Steelers used a 4th round draft pick on Landry Jones two years ago only to have him be inactive for every regular season game since. Could be time for another plan?

10 most heartbreaking Steelers losses

In addition to looking through the rosters with a fine tooth comb this is the season for rankings. Jim Racalto of the Sports Kings website has ranked the 10 most heartbreaking Steelers losses for us to lament over.

Some bad wounds opening up so brace yourself before clicking on that link. It’s tough to forget the 1994 AFC Championship Game where a Neil O’Donnell pass was broken up on 4th down inside the Chargers 10-yard line, until you remember the next year and Super Bowl XXX where Neil O’Donnell threw 3 interceptions, two to Super Bowl MVP Larry Brown.

I think the one that’s the hardest for me to get over is the 2004 AFC Championship Game. It was Roethlisberger’s rookie season and the Steelers went 15-1 that year and demolished the Patriots in a mid-season game. The Patriots came into Heinz Field for the AFC title game and ahhhhh! I can’t. You know the rest. What’s your most devastating loss as a Steelers fan?
