The NFL offseason has officially begun and as we prepare for combines, free agency, and the draft Steelers season never officially ends. We’ll be busy looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold so we’ve got you covered. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Wednesday, Feb. 18th.

Possible Casualties

Bob Labriola was asked if Steelers wide receiver Lance Moore and defensive end Cam Thomas could be the biggest names of salary cap casualties to come in the near future. Labriola responded that Moore and Thomas’ potential release this offseason would have more to do with performance than salary cap issues and I’m inclined to agree.

Aside from LeGarrette Blount ending up literally walking out on the team, Cam Thomas was quite possibly the worst offseason signing last year, never contributing much of anything to the defensive line besides maybe pre-snap penalties and blown gap assignments. And Moore has already asked for his release from the team, never fully gelling with Ben Roethlisberger and not really being needed as intended when we all thought last season the wide receiving corps would be in dire need of a veteran presence.

Scouting OLBs

Stop me if you heard this one before, the Steelers are most likely going to be drafting a linebacker in one of the early rounds of the draft. This time, it’s totally a need as the outside linebacker position is as thin as Brett Keisel’s beard is this time of year. Not to mention, according to ESPN’s Scott Brown, the Steelers managed their lowest sack total since 1989 this season. Yikes.

With the NFL Scouting Combine coming up this weekend, Brown suggests some of the linebackers the Steelers should be taking a look at. He suggest they target Alvin “Bud” Dupree, from Kentucky, Lorenzo Mauldin out of Louisville and Nate Orchard from Utah.

Hot 100 Free Agents

Pro Football Talk ranked the top 100 free agents ready to hit the market come March 10th. The No. 1 overall on the list is Detroit Lions DE Ndamukong Suh while the Steelers’ outside linebacker Jason Worilds ranked tenth amongst available free agents.

Now to do a little daydreaming…what if the Steelers were able to acquire Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston via free agency? That would be amazing. Worilds can take a hike and Blitzburgh would be back for sure. He wouldn’t want like a ton of money, do you think? What free agents do you think the Steelers will sign this offseason?
