Happy Birthday Todd

Steelers Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley turned 48 on Saturday. Happy Birthday Coach!

Be nice.

The what now?

More often than not, the huddle is meant to bring you stories of your Steelers from around the sports world, found on the internet. Usually fun stories, thought provoking stories, or stories I think I can make some pretty good smart ass remarks about. This time, I came across a full offseason breakdown for all 32 NFL teams including the Steelers and just had to shake my head.

Vincent Frank of Sportsnaut from Yard Barker broke down the key free agents and salary cap situations for each team and included potential salary cap casualties. Frank lists the Steelers’ potential key free agents as Jason Worilds and Ike Taylor. Yeah, that Ike Taylor. I’m not sure how much thought he put into this but a veteran player who started only five games last year and has already publicly said he’s pretty sure his playing days in Pittsburgh are done doesn’t exactly make a “key free agent.”

It gets better. He then goes on to list the potential cap casualties to include Troy Polamalu and, get this, Lawrence Timmons. I’m not sure where this dude is getting his information from but you can only laugh at this point. The idea of the Steelers cutting their best and most consistent linebacker to save salary cap room is downright criminal. Timmons had 132 tackles and two sacks; not to mention the Steelers aren’t exactly stocked up on linebackers. The shortage really is on the outside and Timmons plays inside but still, cap casualty? Not even.

Everybody’s a critic

Greg Bedard of The MMQB says the Steelers are in a bad salary cap situation, just like always. He notes that the team let Emmanuel Sanders walk in free agency last year and he went off to have a good year with the Broncos and the team is making a mistake by letting Jason Worilds walk in free agency this year.

Where to start. Now I get we were all kind of apprehensive about the Steelers wide receiving corps before the season started but I wouldn’t bet there’s a single person in all of Steeler Nation that thinks the team should have wasted money on Sanders. And of course he had a terrific season with the Broncos.

All of the wide receivers on that team have terrific seasons. It’s kind of the thing out there right now; as long as Peyton’s neck holds up it’s an offensive free-for-all. However, the Steelers had a better offensive year in 2014 than the Broncos did so, yeah big mistake letting Emmanuel Sanders leave.

About Jason Worilds, he has been the team’s sack leader over the past two seasons and they did Transition tag him last year. I don’t know how that’s going to play out but I do know that the team doesn’t need to overpay Worilds just to keep a linebacker who’s had the most sacks while the team overall has had their lowest amount in decades. He’s been the best performing linebacker on a poor performing linebacking group. That’s the sad truth.
