Ben Roethlisberger got paid. According to Mark Kaboly of the Trib, the five-year contract Roethlisberger signed on Friday with the Steelers is worth $21.85 million in new money. That puts him in Aaron Rodgers territory now. Roethlisberger’s contract is for $99 million through 2019 and can increase to as much as $108 million with incentives.
The contract included a $31 million signing bonus and he’ll make $65 million over the first three years of the deal. The deal saves the team about $1 million in cap space but it’s more about the future than the present. Signing Roethlisberger to this extension means the Steelers’ window for a shot at another championship extends as well. We weren’t winning a Super Bowl in 2005 with Tommy Maddox under center and all due respect to Bruce Gradkowski, we’re not winning one with him starting either.
