The Trib’s Mark Kaboly caught up with Steelers GM Kevin Colbert out in Arizona where the NFL Owner’s Meetings are being held and got his thoughts on how the Steelers went about free agency and where they go from here. Colbert explained that the plan for free agency primarily was to re-sign their in-house free agents but to look at outside options if the fit was right.
“We knew we weren’t going to be big players going in, so we are not surprised at where we are at this point. We didn’t feel we had to come out with any specific number of players. If something made sense, it made sense.” – Kevin Colbert
For what it’s worth, Colbert also admitted that the cornerback position was the one with the most glaring need and one the team still needs to make additions to. Most likely, however, those additions are going to come from this year’s draft as opposed to free agency. The Steelers “kicked the tires” on free agent cornerbacks Patrick Robinson and Sterling Moore but didn’t sign either one.
