Steelers 2015 Free Agent Watch: Brandon Copeland Good Fit?
The Steelers Art Rooney II stated that the team is pretty much done with free agency.
I’d like to believe that, but it’s hard to imagine that the Steelers are just completely done and leaving everything up to the draft. The needs are just too many. Right?
The Steelers have quite a nice pile of savings in cap space as the muddle through the free agency period prior to the draft. They have more than enough to sign the rookies they draft.
Yes, the rules have changed, and the unused cap money can get carried over into next season. But why work hard to make the savings now if you aren’t going to use them?
The Steelers could get into a bidding war if they want, but is there anyone worth it?
Enter Brandon Copeland.
Copeland is an undrafted free agent from Penn. He posted good enough numbers to get picked up by the Ravens and then the Titans. He’ll be 24 this summer, and could be the added depth at OLB.
Copeland is one of the new rave hybrid EDGE rushers – too small for DE but athletic enough to play outside linebacker.
There could be too much interest, however for the Steelers to be players in the Copeland Sweepstakes.
Eleven teams with four in serious contention. Schefter didn’t expand on who is exactly interested. And, it’s never been reported that the Steelers are one of the eleven.
It’s a nice thought, and it would be nice if the Steelers made a play for this guy. The draft might be ripe with edge rushers as Mike Tomlin pointed out in the coaches meetings in Arizona, but picking up Copeland could be a nice step forward going into the draft.
