Super Rematches

Because the Super Bowl is turning the Golden Age of 50 this year, the NFL is planning to celebrate for the entire season. The schedule hasn’t been set yet but the opponents have and the 2015 NFL Regular season will feature 19 rematches of Super Bowl games. Teresa Varley points out that the Steelers will be playing in rematches of four of the Super Bowls they’ve played in.

The Hall of Fame game on August 9th will be a rematch of Super Bowl IX, the first Super Bowl win in team history when the Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings 16-6. The Steelers will face the St. Louis Rams in a rematch of Super Bowl XIV, where the Steelers defeated the then Los Angeles Rams 31-19. The Steelers will travel to Seattle for a rematch of Super Bowl XL against the Seahawks and they’ll host the Arizona Cardinals in a rematch of Super Bowl XLIII. Look for lots of gold around the NFL this season.

Callin’ Baton Rouge

The Steelers have glaring needs at pass rusher and cornerback that they’re going to have to address in the draft because they’re clearly not scooping up free agents to plug those holes. Chase Goodbread of College Football 24/7 writes that Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin headed on down to Baton Rouge to dine with two of LSU’s top prospects; cornerback Jalen Collins and pass rusher Danielle Hunter.

Collins didn’t participate in drills at LSU’s Pro Day, which Tomlin attended as well, because of a foot surgery but he did clock a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and could be a good target for the Steelers if they went defensive back in the first round.

Don’t stop believing

While many in Steeler Nation already consider Dri Archer a bust and a waste of a third-round draft pick, ESPN’s Scott Brown explains that Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin isn’t ready to give up on the project player just yet.

"“I’m excited for what 2015 could be for him. I have a reasonable expectation that he’s going to grow in all areas and be a productive player for us. Guys like him usually do that. He is a good guy. He is a smart guy. He is hard working. He has all the variables that usually produce a positive outcome. We are going to give him an opportunity to do it.” – Mike Tomlin"

Quite possibly the best opportunity for Archer to land himself a substantial role on the roster would be on special teams. The offense certainly isn’t hurting for weapons and he didn’t exactly showcase any skills last season that could give anyone confidence that he can find holes and run routes without being knocked backwards 17 yards. I guess it wouldn’t be the worst idea anyone’s ever had if they let him try and earn his kick returning job back. Not the best idea either. We’ll see how it goes.
