The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially on summer vacation. They’ve wrapped up their minicamp and will head out to parts unknown for the next five weeks until reporting to the dorms of Saint Vincent for the Steelers’ 50th season of training camp in Latrobe. While the Steelers are enjoying their summer break we’ll be busy looking for mentions of your Black & Gold so we’ve got you covered. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Tuesday, June 23rd.

Bell in the dark
While the eyes of the NFL turn to New York today for the big showdown between Roger Goodell and Tom Brady for Brady’s appeal of his four-game suspension I can’t help but wonder what’s up with Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell‘s suspension. Bell was suspended back in the beginning of April for his arrest last summer and appealed the three-game suspension in May.
But, as of last week when he spoke with the PPG’s Ed Bouchette, he’s in the dark about when his appeal will be even heard. Brady was punished by Goodell for his deflated balls back on May 11th and Brady, through the NFLPA, issued his appeal on May 14th. Brady’s appeal will be heard by Goodell himself today but there is no timetable for when he’s likely to give his final ruling.
I guess there isn’t a “take a number” process with NFL appeals like getting deli at the grocery store.
Get to know DeAngelo
Teresa Varley’s series this year on getting to know the new free agent signings will be very short. It starts and ends with running back DeAngelo Williams. All of the rest of the new guys are draft picks or undrafted free agents. Williams is in his 10th year in the NFL out of Memphis.
When asked what he thinks of when he hears “Steelers football” he had a response I think a lot of Steeler Nation would have as well.
"“Six Super Bowl championships on the way to seven.” – DeAngelo Williams"
He was also asked what he liked about Pittsburgh so far and he seems to have gelled with his teammates very quickly.
"“I love the atmosphere. I love Coach Tomlin. I love the work ethic of all of the guys. All of the guys on the offensive line, I love the relationship and brotherhood I have developed with these guys already and I know it’s going to be something special this year.” – DeAngelo Williams"
Who’s got a top 5 QB? We do, that’s who
ESPN’s John Clayton ranked who he thinks will be the top quarterbacks for the next three years. He factored in age and projected decline and that’s why Peyton Manning’s name drops off after the 2015 season when Peyton will turn 147.
For 2015 he ranked Aaron Rodgers at No. 1 followed by Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson. Gee, I don’t see Joe Flacco anywhere, do yinz?
For the 2016 projection he’s got Rodgers followed by Luck this time and then Brady, Roethlisberger, Brees, Wilson, Matt Ryan and Flacco with a bounce-back year. In 2017 Clayton’s crystal ball predicts Rodgers to still be the league’s top QB with Luck, Roethlisberger, Brady, Wilson, Ryan, Flacco and Cam Newton behind.
