Tomlin on the 53-man roster
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spoke with the media following the team’s announcement of their roster cuts and moves. The team will assemble starting on Sunday for their game preparation prior to their flight to Foxborough to take on the Patriots.
Tomlin explained the moves that were made might not be the final moves from the team. Obviously with Le’Veon Bell and Martavis Bryant starting on the suspension list and Maurkice Pouncey not yet moved to IR there will be roster moves made well into the season.
"“We’ve been going through some procedural things with the roster. Those things are ongoing, and probably will be ongoing for the next day or so as other teams make their decisions and we evaluate what’s available. Just normal procedure for us. We got a little bit of our business done, what with our first game coming on Thursday, but we’ll keep an eye on what’s going on in other cities and the things that might help us be better.” – Mike Tomlin"
Still in the market
Ed Bouchette of the PPG reminds us that one of the positions where the Steelers could be looking to add players to the roster in the next couple of days is the running back position. Bell starts the season on the suspended list so he does not count against the 53-man roster. So of the four running backs on the team; DeAngelo Williams, Dri Archer, Will Johnson and Roosevelt Nix, the last two guys are actually fullbacks.
Williams is the only true halfback on the roster and that’s not an ideal situation to be in to start the first two games of the season while Bell is suspended. Josh Harris was cut on Saturday due to injuries preventing him from making an impact through camp and preseason. Bouchette tends to think the Steelers will look to add another running back based on Tomlin’s words.
"“We’re going to look at the market, not only at the running back position but all positions over the next 24-48 hours.” – Mike Tomlin"
Old man Deebo
The Steelers are carrying ten linebackers on the roster for the first time in a very long time and a lot is expected out of this group this season. They represent the youth movement and the old guard at the same time, as Mike Tomlin illustrates hilariously.
