Steelers game day grub: Special deflated brownie balls

facebooktwitterreddit

Who’s ready for another season of Steelers football and tasty food? I know I am. The best season of the whole year is football season. You can take your pumpkin spiced whatevers and shove ’em. I’ll take some football snacks and a cold brew any day of the week and most definitely twice on Sundays.

This week the Steelers take on the New England Patriots in a much-anticipated matchup of AFC offensive power houses. Since the game is on Thursday night and not Sunday afternoon I opted for a sweet treat over regular tailgate fare. You can enjoy these balls after you consumed your pregame meal and have settled into the couch to watch the Steelers take the field.

I couldn’t resist the opportunity to poke a little fun at the multiple elephants in the room, so to speak, surrounding this game. With Tom Brady’s suspension being overturned for the deflating football scandal even he would want his hands on these delicious balls. Plus, you can spike them with a “special” ingredient, should you be sharing your football party with LeGarrette Blount, Le’Veon Bell or Martavis Bryant.

These balls are for you to personalize. Whether you like them fully inflated, a little squishy or spiked with that special something; these are the balls for your football season kickoff celebration.

Special deflated brownie balls

First, you’ll take your favorite boxed brownie mix and combine the ingredients according to the package directions. If you have a favorite home-made brownie recipe to use, you might be too sophisticated to enjoy all of the ball jokes in this post, or you’re just a brownie enthusiast and for that you are welcome to use your own brownie concoction.

You’ll want to under-bake them slightly. This helps in forming them into your desired ball-shape. If you over bake them or even bake them completely, don’t worry. I can save your balls. You will just crumble the pan of brownies up and mix with some frosting till the mixture holds together in the shape of a ball.

Once your brownie balls are formed, you’ll dip them in chocolate. Yes, that’s right, chocolate-dipped balls. We’re fancy now. The chocolate dipping mixture is simply 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips melted with 2 TBS of shortening. You can melt it in the microwave on 30 second intervals until completely melted.

Roll your balls in the chocolate, making sure you cover the entire ball. I’m not going to lie, at this point in the process; the balls are going to resemble turds. Don’t be afraid, they’re delicious turds. Have a good laugh and keep going.

Decorate with white frosting “football laces” after the chocolate has set in the refrigerator and your balls have hardened. Viola! Balls! If the steps are a bit too much for you to take on for a week-night game, don’t worry, you can just admire my balls.

Enjoy the game and the grub!
