Grades: Three Steelers who fell short vs. Chiefs
By Tim Weaver
3. Keith Butler & Mike Tomlin – F
Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
Butler has inherited a whole lot of talented pass rushers, so it’s no surprise that the Steelers excel at getting to the quarterback. The rest of their defense could use some work though, and it all starts at the top.
Yesterday Pittsburgh proved completely unable to stop the Chiefs’ running game, and that’s a sad state of affairs considering the fact that Jamaal Charles wasn’t dressed. Charcandrick West (who?) ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on just 22 carries. As a team the Chiefs averaged 4.8 yards per carry. The real problem for the unit remains pass defense, though.
For the season the Steelers are giving up nearly 277 passing yards per game – only five teams average more.
Butler and Mike Tomlin need to address the coverage issues sooner rather than later or it won’t matter how many points Big Ben and company put on the board.
