The Pittsburgh Steelers vs New England Patriots ending was the most controversial game of the 2017 season, and everyone knows it.
On the Patriots six yard-line, Steelers tight end, Jesse James, secured what looked like a game-winning touchdown catch with less than 20 seconds remaining. But after referee Tony Corrente reversed the call into a no catch, every Pittsburgh fan blew up in flames.
Pittsburgh has been without linebacker, Ryan Shazier, since his gut-wrenching spinal injury in Week 13. Although Shazier’s season is over and future career continues to be evaluated, the linebacker has been one of the Steelers’ biggest motivations moving forward.
Making his first appearance at Heinz Field since the injury, Shazier got the crowd going early with a waive of the terrible towel on the jumbotron. Then, after Pittsburgh’s controversially ending, No. 50 made his opinion known on Twitter.
In Pittsburgh, James’ touchdown was a catch and there’s no questions asked. The one moment of the season that will now impact the playoff picture and road to the Super Bowl in the AFC somehow ended up on the other side of Pittsburgh.
Now, this team needs to overcome a journey through Foxborough for the second year to get their chance at a title.
Although it was great to see Shazier in attendance following an extended stay in the hospital, it would’ve been better to get him the win. Either way, seeing the man in the stands warmed the hearts of thousands of fans wearing black and gold and throughout the NFL.
Shazier has a long way to go before he’s back on a football field, but seeing him waive his terrible towel is a sign of hope everyone across the league wanted to see.
