Former San Diego and AAF product, Kameron Kelly, logs first team reps at free safety on the Steelers.

Kameron Kelly is a name that Steelers fans probably aren’t very familiar with. That’s likely because just a few short months ago, he was playing football for a league that no longer exists.

The former AAF player is a Swiss army knife who played a little bit of everything dating back to his days in college – including cornerback, safety, and even wide receiver.

After just a handful of OTAs under his belt in a Steelers uniform, it appears Kelly is already taking first team reps on the Steelers defense, according to Joe Rutter of TribLIVE:

Still just 22 years old, Kelly is already starting to make his mark in Pittsburgh. Starting free safety, Sean Davis, was apparently absent during this session of OTAs. But it’s interesting to note that it wasn’t a veteran secondary player who filled in at FS during his absence, rather an AAF alumni.

Kelly graduated from San Diego in 2017 where over the course of three years as a starter, he compiled 163 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 9 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles.

The interceptions particularly stand out, as the Steelers secondary has struggled to take the ball away in recent years (Sean Davis adding just 1 pick in his last 17 games).

Kameron Kelly is far from a lock to make the team, but Pittsburgh has a huge need at safety and a backup spot should be up for grabs. Perhaps he will have a chance to be a versatile play-maker in the back end the Steelers have been looking for.

Here are some of Kelly’s best plays from a dominant week 5 performance in the AAF this year:
