The Steelers have many professionally football players trying to make the 53-man roster. However, two of them aren’t from the NFL.

This is an exciting time of the year for young players who are fighting desperately to make an NFL roster. In  less than two months, the Pittsburgh Steelers (and every other team in the league) will be forced to cut their 90-man roster down to just 53 players.

Pittsburgh has many young players who will be battling it out over the course of training camp and preseason before packing their bags. A few of the lucky ones will get a name printed on the back of their jerseys for the regular season.

Two players that are going to be particularly interesting to watch this year are Diontae Spencer and Kameron Kelly. Neither players has seen a snap on an NFL field, but both have played professional football elsewhere.

Spencer was a shifty receiver and return man in the CFL. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound McNeese State product was a 2-time All-Star and posted a game of nearly 500 all-purpose yards for the Ottawa Redblacks. He impressed during mini camp, and looks to make a mark this preseason on the Steelers.

Kelly is a former defensive back for the AAF. The former undrafted player lined up everywhere in the secondary for the San Diego Fleet, and even posted a game of 3 interceptions and 4 pass defenses before the American Alliance Football league was shut down through just 8 games into its first season.

Both Diontae Spencer and Kameron Kelly are receiving a lot of hype for their accomplishments in other football leagues, but which player has the best chance of cracking the Steelers roster?

While Spencer has accomplished some impressive things in the CFL, his journey to the NFL is going to be much more difficult. The small receiver is already 27 years old and will be fighting for playing time or a returner role behind Ryan Switzer and Eli Rogers – both of which are established NFL receivers.

Kelly, on the other hand, has a real shot at cracking the roster if he has a solid showing throughout camp and preseason. The former AAF standout is fortunate that the Steelers elected to ignore the safety position in both the draft and free agency this season.

Instead, Kelly is up against a few other young players in P.J. Locke and Dravon Askew-Henry. Strong safety Jordan Dangerfield is also on the inside looking out, but his roster spot is not guaranteed.

Both Diontae Spencer and Kameron Kelly are intersting players who have impressive pedigrees in their own rights. However, the wide receiver position is very crowded on the Steelers right now, and the Steelers are still looking for help at safety.

dark. Next. 4 teams Steelers should call about a potential Artie Burns trade

Even if Spencer outperforms Kelly this preseason, the latter will still have a better chance of cracking the roster in September.
