The Steelers entered camp with their eyes set on deciding who would be their number three quarterback on the roster. Many fans and those around the organization know how important the depth at the position is for teams across the NFL.

The fight for the third-string was between Devlin “Duck” Hodges and former first-round pick Paxton Lynch. Many people however forgot that outside options were always a real possibility. Dobbs was claimed after Jacksonville released him from their roster and so Hodges was released from the Steelers in a corresponding move.

Dobbs comes back after being traded last year to the Jaguars for a fifth-round pick. After a year of loaning Dobbs, they gained a fifth and got back their more favored third-string quarterback. He brings knowledge of the Steelers offense and some experience.

Dobbs is what he is and that’s nothing more than a serviceable backup and not much else other than that. He is more valuable in practices and games than Hodges was. He has a more dual-threat ability as both a passer and a runner. One would imagine that if he clears waivers, Hodges will rejoin the team on their practice squad unless another team entices him to join their practice squad instead.
