Kline hasn’t been getting any offers he likes halfway through the 2020 season.

Josh Kline should worry less about money now, and take a cheaper deal with the Steelers in hopes of beating Matt Feiler out for a roster spot later in the season. If he doesn’t, he would at least provide depth that allows Dotson to start at left guard next year when Feiler hits free agency.

You may be wondering why I’ve all but given up on Feiler with the Steelers. First, Feiler will find a team desperate enough to pay too much for an offensive lineman that can adequately fill in anywhere on their line as depth. Yet, I don’t see Feiler as a fit for this line even right now. The Steelers currently do not have a guard that is ranked in the top 50 by PFF in run blocking. Decastro is not the best run blocker by any means; however, the former All-Pro is still one of the best pass-blocking guards in the league. Feiler is an alright pass-blocker while being a downright rough run blocker. He doesn’t have the size to really handle the interior of a line on a consistent basis, especially against more powerful defensive tackles.

Something else Kline offers Pittsburgh is flexibility. He is only slightly more adequate than Feiler, yet he is definitely a better run blocker. More importantly, if the Steelers really like Dotson, they could look to trade Decastro after the season for draft compensation to dump some cap space. Kline would be an immediate upgrade in terms of run-blocking over Feiler. That helps now, and in the future, the Steelers could look into dumping Decastro’s cap space in favor of Dotson because Dotson no longer has to replace Feiler after this season. They would still need more depth for the interior, but that could be another cheap free agent or a later draft pick.
