He was my most underrated player coming into the season. He is so close to that even now.

I am not going to say that Edmunds is the best safety in the league, not by a long shot. However, he is way more talented than any of us give him credit for. His number 1 problem throughout his short career has been pass coverage. He has always been great in the box and is as sure of a tackler as a defensive back can be. Yet, his coverage had been so bad at times that throughout his first 3 years fans had been calling for a replacement.

He has significantly improved his skills in coverage in 2020. He went from being one of the worst safeties in coverage in 2018 and 2019 working all the way up to being the 17th highest graded safety by PFF in pass coverage out of 89 players. He has graded ahead of guys like Jamal Adams, Tyrann Mathieu, and Antony Harris in coverage while being just 5 places behind Minkah Fitzpatrick. This list included both the FS and SS positions and that’s what makes 17th so impressive for it being his greatest weakness coming into 2020.

He still needs to improve in man coverage to see his grade go higher. Yet, he has been steadily improving every season and after making such an impressive leap in his coverage abilities between 2019 and 2020, I can’t tell you where his ceiling is. He is on track to make himself one of the best safeties in the league by the time he is 25 or 26 at being just 23 years old right now. He may have seemed like he was picked too high, but he has massive amounts of potential and is just now scratching the surface of it.
