Picking an overrated defender on one of the best defenses in the league is a tall task.

I do believe that Vince Williams is a good player. He makes a lot of splash plays in the run game and blitzing. However, he is the worst starter on the Steelers’ defense when it comes to pass coverage. He is having a better season completion percentage-wise than he did in 2019 at just 53.6%. His average yards per target has gone down from 9.0 in 2019 to 5.9 in 2020. However, in just 10 games, he has allowed 15 completions which is 2 more than all 14 of his games from last season. He has allowed 2 touchdowns in coverage when he allowed just 1 in 2019 and he is just 28 yards away from the total he allowed in 2019.

With Devin Bush out for the rest of the season, the Steelers are desperately going to be looking for Avery Williamson to be ready by the postseason. Williams as of now is handling more coverage duties than earlier in the season and he hasn’t faced an elite tight end yet, but in the playoffs, the Steelers could be seeing players like Travis Kelce of the Chiefs or Darren Waller of the Raiders. You still shouldn’t discount Mark Andrews of the Ravens either as he will be back and ready to go for the playoffs.

He would more than likely be the player in coverage teams are going to throw towards in crunch time. That is really concerning when Minkah Fitzpatrick is lined up over him. With a ballhawk like Fitzpatrick lining up just a few yards behind Williams, you would think that teams would be less inclined to throw the ball his way. However, that is how bad Williams is in coverage in 2020.

It pains me to put a player who is having a career year for the Steelers in the overrated category. Yet, this is a passing league. When teams are fighting to stay alive, they will have a clear target in the passing game and that target is whoever lines up against Williams.
