Round 3:
Alex Highsmith, OLB
Original pick: Alex Highsmith, OLB
While the Steelers had one of the better drafts amongst the league, the only remaining pick from the original class is Alex Highsmith. The third-round pick found himself the starter after Bud Dupree was lost for the year to injury, and while his stats weren’t gaudy, he has the look of a starting pass rusher in this league. While not the biggest or most athletic player, he has a good pass rush plan that should translate to success as he gains more experience.
Frankly, the fact that Highsmith is on this roster is a huge plus right now. Imagine not having him with the likelihood that Dupree leaves as a free agent. A roster that is already facing an exodus of talent would have to fill a position that is typically harder to fill. Instead, the team can expect Highsmith to fill that role and make the transition far easier.
Going into next year, there should be little issue with expecting Highsmith to succeed with the Steelers. A full offseason of strength-building will be huge for him as he tries to take his game to the next level. Highsmith partnered with T.J. Watt should form a good duo of pass rushers for the next few years. He was the right pick then, and he still is now. The Steelers shouldn’t have any regrets over this pick.
