Round 2:

Still not addressing the offensive line or running back position (that will be coming soon, I promise), the teams next top need is tight end. There is no second option behind Eric Ebron and long term this position looks bleak. There are two top prospects in this draft, and while Kyle Pitts seems like a slam dunk top-10 pick, Pat Freiermuth has value ranging from bottom of the first to bottom of the second. It may not be likely that he finds his way to pick 55, it would be a truly best-case scenario if he fell that far.

Freiermuth is more in the mold of a Heath Miller than an Ebron, but that would be fine for a Steelers team trying to reestablish their running game. Year one he would slot in as the second tight end and primary blocking tight end. By next year he should be the starter. Tight ends typically take a year or two to develop, so giving him some time will be a must. That said, if he takes the reigns next year, this pick would be well worth it.

The real issue is, if the Steelers don’t select a tight end from the top two picks, they will have to settle for a lower option later on. This means they still won’t have a potential starter down the road and will be in a similar position next offseason at tight end. If Freiermuth makes it to pick 55, it is a no brainer. He provides a solution to a position that hasn’t been set since Miller retired.
