Grading the Pittsburgh Steelers projected starting defense in 2021
The Pittsburgh Steelers were terrific on the defensive side of the ball last season. Here’s how I have them graded entering 2021.
As the Steelers return to training camp they’ve had some free agency losses on defense. They obviously think they have replacements on the roster but I’m not so sure. Mike Hilton and Steven Nelson were both quality defensive backs and they may be missed. They seem to think Cam Sutton can hold down the corner but at nickel they have an unproven player and a bunch of guys who can’t break a 4.60/40. You can’t tell me opposing offensive coordinators won’t feast on that shortcoming.
The loss of Bud Dupree was anticipated by Steelers GM, Kevin Colbert, with the drafting of outside linebacker, Alex Highsmith, in the 3rd round of the 2020 Draft. Vince Williams has just announced his retirement, limiting the Steelers options at inside linebacker.
Defensive Linemen
DE – Cam Heyward – A+ – Heyward is the undisputed leader of the Steelers “D” and a four-time Pro Bowl player. A very effective defender against both the pass and the run. Only 4 sacks in 2020 but added 7 tackles for loss and 19 QB hits showing how disruptive he can be. At 31 Cam’s showing no signs of slowing down.
NT – Tyson Alualu – B – After a long career Alualu, finally, found his true position at nose tackle. He has been great at clogging up the middle. He almost left but good for us, he came back.
DE – Stephon Tuitt – A – Tuitt had his first (almost) injury-free season in his seven-year career and played very well. Finished second on the team with 11.0 sacks and QB hits with 25. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a trend.
