It makes sense that Tomlin wanted to bring in someone into camp to push Chris Boswell, especially since he has not looked very crisp the last two seasons. It even makes sense to consider replacing Boswell at some point sooner than later. The longer he stays, he is likely to become a liability rather than an asset.

That said it’s hard to figure what Tomlin thought by bringing in Sam Sloman. He is a second-year player but looking at his stats from last year and the fact he was unemployed at the end of the season, he is not the person to push Boswell for the starting position. Perhaps Tomlin saw something in him; what that was is debatable.

Sloman played for two teams in 2020. He played seven games for the Rams and one game for the Titans. For both teams, he went  10-13, missing one field goal in the 20-39 yard range and missing one form 40-49 yards. In Extra points, he went 23-26. Sloman is not exactly a Justin Tucker when it comes to extra points.

Then in the Dallas game this pre-season, he went 1-2 in field goals and 1-for 2 in extra points. Although Dallas did not do any better in that game between both kickers, they missed three straight field goals and one extra point; that has to be some type of NFL record. Sloman did improve against the Eagles, going 5 for 5 in both field goals and extra points.

Right now, with Sloman, he is prone to misses, not that Boswell is not, however until the 2019 season, Boswell was fairly reliable and generally good for an automatic three. As of the last two seasons, that reliable consistency has not been there. However, at this point, keep Boswell; you know what to expect from him; cut Sloman or at best put him on the practice squad to see if he develops or draft a kicker in 2022.
