The Pittsburgh Steelers took care of business against the Detriot Lions. Here are my four biggest takeaways from the impressive win.

It was hard to watch the Steelers starters against the Detriot Lions on Saturday night and not come away pleased with the results. While the box score indicated that this was a close contest with a final score of 26-20, that couldn’t have been further from the truth for the majority of the game.

When the starters were in the game Pittsburgh wiped the floor with Detriot – surrendering zero points in the first half and outpacing them by 20 on the scoreboard during that time. In fact, Mike Tomlin’s team went on a 23-0 run to begin the game as Keith Butler’s defense held the Lions scoreless through the first three quarters.

There were plenty of takeaways from the Steelers in this game (mostly positive) and it was what we hoped to see from the starters in their last meaningful exhibition contest, as they are likely to rest next week against the Panthers. Here are my takeaways from the win:

Ben Roethlisberger looked extremely sharp

No single player is tied more to the potential success of the team in 2021 than Ben Roethlisberger. After a monumental collapse over his final six games (including the playoffs) of 2020, Big Ben looked as good as ever against the Lions on Saturday night.

Though his first drive of the game stalled, Big Ben quickly capped off two impressive scoring drives that finished with terrific touchdown throws – both to rookie tight end, Pat Freiermuth. Roethlisberger was electric all-around – connecting on a few beautiful passes down the field and looking like a much younger player than the one we saw at the end of the season.

He finished the night completing 8 of 10 passes for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns while earning a perfect passer rating, via ESPN.
