Jaylen Samuels might be down, but he’s not out yet. After being on the active roster each of his first three seasons, Samuels now finds himself demoted to the practice squad. However, it may just be a matter of time before he returns to Pittsburgh’s roster.

While many fans might not be in favor of this choice, the Steelers like Samuels’ versatility and ability to play in any situation. Though he may not be anything special between the tackles, he’s a decent blocker and can be used as a pass-catcher if need be.

The Steelers currently have Benny Snell, Anthony McFarland, and Kalen Ballage behind rookie first-round pick Najee Harris, but McFarland recently landed on IR – meaning he won’t be eligible to return for at least three weeks.

Perhaps this means that Samuels will be promoted soon, or the team could just roll with three backs for now. Either way, if another injury occurs (and we know this happens frequently at the running back position) Samuels could be on his way back to the active roster.

Practice squad players rarely get the chance to have a big impact on a team’s success in the regular season, but these three players could be called to the Steelers active roster at some point in the 2021 season.
