Steelers Linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III

Ulysees Gilbert III was a surprise to make the roster, as he didn’t have a great time playing in the late summer process. He has not been able to show much during his young career due to unfortunate injuries and other reasons. He did get some playing time last season after a couple of injuries hindered the middle linebacker spot, though.

Gilbert made a huge play during Week 1 against the Bills as he picked up a blocked punt and returned it to the end zone for a touchdown, though. That was the game-winning play and a nice play by Miles Killebrew as well, who blocked the punt. It was a big play for a player who has lost some relevance on Pittsburgh’s roster. Gilbert had some promise coming onto this squad coming out of college but he just hasn’t seemed to gain traction since.

Once these players come off of the injured reserve list, then this player could still find his way off this team. He does have playing experience, and that is a boost, but there are better athletes on this roster for his positional group.

The Steelers will have to release at least three players after Week 3 concludes, and Gilbert seems to be another primed candidate to hear his name called to the coach’s office. He could always circle back on the practice squad, and that would make sense, as this player knows the defense and could start in a pinch, plus he knows how to play special teams.

The Steelers could still make moves, and these players need to be careful before a replacement is found for their roster spot.

It is not often that Pittsburgh shakes up the 53-man roster mid-season, but stranger things have happened.
