The Pittsburgh Steelers have some quality pieces to build around, but they are still lacking future starters at some of the most important positions in football.

Watching the dominance of T.J. Watt this season has made me thankful that the Steelers have a future Hall of Famer who will be harassing quarterbacks for a very long time. As an edge defender, Watt plays one of the most important positions in football and his impact can be felt in nearly every game he plays.

Sadly, I would argue that Pittsburgh is still lacking future starters at three of the four most important positions in football. Here are the positions they desperately need to fill:

Let’s get the obvious right out of the way. Ben Roethlisberger has probably been the single most important asset Pittsburgh ever had, but his time is swiftly coming to a close. After a remarkable Hall of Fame career, Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert will be tasked with the lofty responsibility of finding his replacement.

How the Steelers proceed in the offseason will dictate their choices early in the NFL Draft. If they have not made a major play for a quarterback prior to April, we can assume that they already have their eyes on their young quarterback of the future.

Either way, it’s clear that Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins are not the answer, and more than anything else on the roster, the Steelers must find their next franchise quarterback. It’s difficult to truly make a run without one.
