The Pittsburgh Steelers need to find a replacement for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Here are five potential candidates to fill the void in 2022.
The moment we’ve all been dreading is just around the corner. While we all knew this day was going to come and that Ben Roethlisberger needed to wrap up his career, Steelers fans don’t want to see another twenty-year drought with sub-par quarterback play.
Sadly, there aren’t really any big names hitting the free-agent market this year. But that doesn’t mean Pittsburgh won’t explore every available option. Here are five potential replacements for Roethlisberger in 2022:
Teddy Bridgewater, Broncos
Teddy Bridgewater would not be a flashy signing by any stretch of the imagination. Though he has a winning record in his NFL career (33-30), Bridgewater doesn’t have any spectacular traits that set him apart from any other quarterback in the league.
Like Roethlisberger over the past few seasons, Bridgewater is better at managing the game and can’t be counted on to take over and carry the team on his shoulders. At 29 years old, we know what type of player we would be getting at this point, and there’s no reason to expect Teddy to be better in Pittsburgh than he was in Denver or Carolina.
Still, Bridgewater offers a veteran presence who can run an offense and do just enough to give his team a chance to sneak into the playoffs. He drew the short straw this year in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions, but he had a respectable season.
The Steelers, meanwhile, could sign Bridgewater to a one-year deal as salary cap is not an issue in 2022. He could give them a bridge quarterback who is better than Mason Rudolph until they find their franchise guy.
