A recent report suggests the Steelers are eying some veteran free-agent quarterbacks. Here’s the signal-caller fans would like to see in Pittsburgh.

Landing an unspectacular veteran quarterback in a questionable free-agent class isn’t exactly a dream scenario. However, there’s a solid chance that this is what the Pittsburgh Steelers will be looking at during the 2022 offseason.

Selling the house for a player like Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson might not be in the cards, and even if the Steelers decide to spend their top pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on the QB position, chances are the guy they draft won’t be ready to start right away.

Pittsburgh does have Mason Rudolph under contract for one more season and they are expected to retain Dwayne Haskins for another year, but both of these options are less than ideal. Mike Tomlin is going to want a quarterback he can feel confident in keeping his impressive streak of non-losing records going.

Recently, Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network reported that the Steelers are eyeing three quarterbacks in free agency, Mitchell Trubisky, Jameis Winston, and Teddy Bridgewater. Following this report, I decided to run a poll to see which free agent QB Steelers fans would prefer.

The results overwhelming favored Mitch Trubisky, as he soaked up 58.4 percent of the total votes:

Behind Trubisky was Winston with 35.4 percent of the 209 votes. Winston, of course, is coming off a torn ACL he suffered during the 2021 season but is expected to be ready to go by training camp. Bridgewater brought up the rear with just 6.2 percent of votes.

Why Steelers fans like Trubisky

Mitch Trubisky saw just 8 pass attempts during the entire 2021 season. While he was considered a former busted 2nd overall pick by the Chicago Bears, many fans believe that Trubisky has drawn the short straw when it has come to second chances.

In his second year in the NFL in 2018, Trubisky put up very respectable numbers as he led his team to an impressive 11-3 record as a starter. He also earned his first Pro Bowl appearance in this season. Trubisky also earned a winning record in each of the next two seasons with the Bears before he was eventually replaced in 2020.

As a member of the Bills in 2021, Trubisky was electric during the preseason, and the discussions arose that he deserved another chance as a starter. When you considered his 29-21 record as a starter, I believe this to be the case as well.

For the Steelers, Trubisky would be the ideal stop-gap quarterback until their next franchise passer comes along. Trubisky is poise and accurate in the pocket, but also has very good mobility to escape and extend the play.

One area he has never been particularly great in is successfully airing the ball out down the field, and much of this has been for lack of effort. Most fans are aware that Trubisky isn’t going to be a player who takes the world by storm, but they believe he can do enough to get this team into the playoffs and perhaps make a run at a championship.

It’s important to remember that the NFL free agency period takes place before the NFL Draft, and the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to decide whether or not they want to fork up for one of these veteran quarterbacks before then. However, I’m certainly getting the impression that Mitch Trubisky is the free-agent QB Steelers fans would love to have this year.
