Mitchell Trubisky wasn’t exactly the prize fans were hoping for, but here are three ways the Steelers QB can be an improvement over Ben Roethlisberger.

On the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period before the official start of free agency on March 16th, the Steelers made a move to get their quarterback for the 2022 season. Former Bills and Bears quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky, signed a two-year deal with Pittsburgh.

With Mason Rudolph as the only somewhat viable option on the team prior to this, it’s clear that Trubiksy will be dubbed the starter when Week 1 rolls around. Trubisky might not seem like a flashy signing, but is he really much worse than what Pittsburgh had with a 39-year-old Ben Roethlisberger at the helm last season?

The Steelers will obviously still need to find a franchise QB option in the near future, but Trubisky could prove good enough to give Pittsburgh a competitive season in 2022. Here are three reasons why he could be an improvement over an aged Ben Roethlisberger we saw the past few seasons:

Trubisky offers more mobility

Probably the biggest factor that separates a 39-year-old Ben Roethlisberger and a 27-year-old Mitch Trubisky is mobility — something that was Big Ben’s Achilles heel these past few seasons. Roethlisberger had a difficult enough time moving within the pocket last year, and rolling out to extend the play was almost out of the question.

Trubisky, on the other hand, has terrific mobility. While he’s never been much of a runner in the NFL, he’s got great feet and a good feel for the pocket. Prior to being the 2nd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Trubisky ran a 4.67 40-yard dash and a 6.87 3-cone drill at the NFL Combine.

Mobility at the QB position is something the Steelers have been lacking since Roethlisberger’s younger years. Trubisky will prove to be better when it comes to eluding pressure in the pocket and extending the play than what we had in 2021.
