Steelers former WR Smith-Schuster

While there were mixed opinions about JuJu Smith-Schuster and his excessive social media use, the young wide receiver was a fan favorite in Pittsburgh (as evidenced by his high jersey sales over the years). JuJu has been excellent for the Steelers, but his value has clearly diminished in recent years.

Though his efficiency went hand in hand with Ben Roethlisberger’s unimpressive play late in his NFL career, it was hard to justify bringing him back — even at a very cheap price point.

We all love the physicality Smith-Schuster brings to the table, and I applaud him for being able and willing to return to the field for Pittsburgh’s playoff game against the Chiefs. However, if we can get past the reputation for a minute and his former Pro Bowl status in 2018 and truly examine the tape, you will find a receiver that just doesn’t offer a whole lot of value to Pittsburgh’s offense.

Without Antonio Brown across from him, JuJu was exposed as a very average receiver who is required to do most of his work from the slot. He didn’t create much separation and explosive plays were lacking. Now on an explosive Chiefs team with a terrific quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, Smith-Schuster will have the chance to revitalize his NFL career.
