Runningback/Fullback (4)

Najee Harris, Anthony McFarland, Trey Edmunds, Derek Watt

Except for Najee Harris, there are no clear-cut favorites to stay on the team. Anyone’s guess is as good as another. Now that said, The Steelers did not re-sign Kalen Ballage, but they did sign two undrafted free agents.

It would be somewhat surprising if the Steelers keep both undrafted rookies, but entirely possible they keep one. The Steelers should keep Anthony McFarland. He was having a good pre-season in 2021  until his injury. He did come back late in the season; however, for whatever reason, the Steelers chose not to use him as he only had three rushes for three yards. Yet it’s unlikely they would cut him.

The only real question is Benny Snell or Trey Edmunds. Honestly, either of them could be on their way out the door; why the Steelers have kept Edmunds is a bigger mystery; he has only been active for six games and has had no rushes in two seasons. Edmunds had no rushes or receptions, and Snell had 36 rushes for 36 yards and two receptions for 13 yards in 2021.

With Edmunds they could always place him on the practice squad, perhaps; however, if Snell does not show anything in pre-season he seems to be the odd man out in the running back corps. The Steelers could possibly keep Mateo Durant and cut Edmunds and Snell, but that is perhaps the most unlikely scenario.
