Steelers tight ends

Tight end is such an underrated positional group on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster, but there is plenty of reason to list it among the best. This isn’t a conversation we would be having two years ago.

In 2020, Eric Ebron was remarkably underwhelming, and there wasn’t much capable depth behind him. It’s funny how fast things can change. Last offseason, the Steelers drafted Pat Freiermuth in the second round. His career got off to a terrific start as he consistently showed his receiving ability as well as his aggressiveness as a blocker.

Alongside him, Zach Gentry took a big step up as the in-line ‘Y’ tight end. His massive frame and strength at the point of attack made him an excellent complement to Freiermuth last year, and the Steelers did some of their best work when they were on the field together.

Pittsburgh also added a Swiss army knife in the 2022 NFL Draft in Connor Heyward, Cameron’s little brother. While undersized to be a true tight end, Heyward could earn the third TE spot on the roster this year over Kevin Rader thanks to his ability to accel in various roles.

The Steelers roster is starting to head in the right direction, and these three positions could help pave the way. I’m excited to witness their growth in these areas during the 2022 season.
