Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff are anxious to see the result of the team’s quarterback competition. Could Diontae Johnson help the Steelers passing game this season?

Quarterback competitions are bittersweet for fans and analysts who await the outcome. Even if the best man wins the job, will he perform well enough to lead his team to success? Matt Canada and the Pittsburgh offense share the same concerns that fans have concerning the team’s quarterback dilemma. As the battle in training camp intensifies, wide receivers on the team prepare for any possible outcome.

Lynn Swan and Hines Ward are remembered by the Steelers Nation for their contributions as wide receivers. The two Hall of Fame wideouts helped their starting quarterbacks develop as elite passers – eventually leading to a Super Bowl victory.

Steelers expect Diontae Johnson to help develop their rookie receivers

When opponents evaluate the Steelers WR current depth chart, the fear of getting scorched for yards does not appear to be imminent. Pittsburgh has a few young route runners who are still working to earn respect from opposing defenses. Leading the charge is Diontae Johnson.

Developing as a receiver has helped Johnson earn a prominent role in Matt Canada’s offense. Since 2019, the former third-round pick has worked his way up the depth chart. His work ethic has helped the young receiver improve his stat line.

At the end of the 2021 season, Pittsburgh’s fourth-year receiver finished with 107 receptions and 1,161 yards receiving – finishing in the top ten in both categories. This was an accomplishment for a player who struggled in his first year. Since then, Johnson has become a leader for other wide receivers, focused on helping his teammates become better for the team.

Steelers need all hands on deck to have a chance in the playoffs this season

Stepping into a leadership role will be an additional task for the former Toledo Rocket in 2022. Rookies like George Pickens and Calvin Austin III will look to their more experienced teammates for guidance as they navigate their first season as a professional.

Sharing experiences will only help the Steelers experience success in the upcoming season. Their lack of experience at the quarterback and receiver positions will require all players to participate in winning efforts – even if they are rookies.

Expectations are high for the former third-round pick this regular season, but his confidence remains unphased. A new two-year extension has reassured Johnson in Pittsburgh’s faith in his talents – motivating him to leave it all on the field. Competing for a playoff berth is the goal for Mike Tomlin’s team. Diontae Johnson will play a factor in how successful the team will be.
