Steelers options in free agency if Mason Rudolph is traded
The Steelers could look to trade Mason Rudolph and that would mean a free agent would need to be signed as a replacement.
The Steelers are currently surrounded by rumors regarding Mason Rudolph potentially being looked at by other teams. He is a backup player that is not going to wow anyone, but he is a better option than most teams currently employ. If this scenario does take place where he is traded, there are some interesting options still available to sign.
It is not the strongest pool of quarterbacks out there free to sign now. Rudolph would be the better option than most of these players that could replace him. Pittsburgh could always wait for the initial cuts to happen before signing someone looking for a new place of employment.
Chris Oladokun could be brought back as the third option
Chris Oladokun was the last pick of the Steelers 2022 NFL Draft class; He did not get much time to show what he had during the preseason and the club’s selection of him is still puzzling. He turned out to be a camp arm and might not even be a practice squad option.
Still, maybe if Rudolph is moved, Oladokun could come back into play for the black and gold. Making him the third-string guy would be a bold move at this current state of time, but it should not be ruled out. The team saw something in him and could always turn to him from a familiarity standpoint.
A.J. McCarron could return to the AFC North
A.J. McCarron is currently without a job in the NFL as the journeyman seems to have his career stalling out. The Steelers could have an interest in the former Bengals quarterback. He last played with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 and could provide some veteran presence to a younger room that might need someone like him.
He might not be the best option, but there are slim pickings by the time a club gets down to their third-stringer. Bringing in a guy with starting experience is an added benefit that provides a little bit of mobility. Pittsburgh might be wise to give him a call and see what kind of shape he is in if Rudolph would find a new home.
Brett Hundley could change into the Steelers colors
Brett Hundley was just released by the Baltimore Ravens and there could be a couple of reasons to bring him aboard. He is a mobile quarterback that would fit the system well, for one. The second thing is that he could potentially give some intel for the heated rivals offense when everyone is always trying to get a leg up on the other teams.
This player was having a decent preseason before he was let go by the Ravens. Hundley also has a decent chunk of experience in the NFL, despite not starting too many contests for his previous employers. He is not going to wow you, but he might fit into this offense the best out of the options listed.
Mike Glennon could be a longtime veteran option
Mike Glennon is the last player to make this list and he has a lot of experience as a veteran in this league. He is currently a free agent and looking for his next opportunity. This veteran has been around the NFL for some time now and could provide some knowledge to a young positional group.
This is another journeyman option for the Steelers currently out on the open market. He has played for six different teams since being drafted in the third round back in 2013. He has starting experience which could be a benefit at third string, but he is not a great fit in the offensive scheme really.
The Steelers could have some interesting free agent options available to them if they decide to move on from Mason Rudolph. The best idea might be to keep the quarterbacks as is, but a trade return might be too good to pass on.
