Steelers need to find a true nose tackle

The nose tackle role was one the Pittsburgh Steelers once had down pat. Tyson Alualu found new life in the Steel City after a long career in Jacksonville and he proved to be one of the better nose tackles in the league for a few years. However, following a season-ending ankle injury at age 35, Alualu looks completely washed up.

His place on the depth chart was eventually taken by Montravius Adams. But on a list of underwhelming Steelers starters, Adams ranks near the top. The journeyman defensive tackle isn’t an ideal fit at the nose guard position, and he just doesn’t offer anything special in terms of size or ability to anchor.

Though I would advise against spending a high draft pick on a situational position like nose tackle, it’s clear that the Steelers could use a massive upgrade here. Finding a stout player to man this position is essential to a team’s run defense.

Maybe free agency is the way to go next year. Either way, the Steelers shouldn’t spend one more game beyond the 2022 season with Montravius Adams as a starter on their football team. They clearly need to upgrade here.
