3 free agents Steelers should consider signing ahead of Week 7
As the Steelers enter Week 7 of their schedule, they have plenty of issues across their roster. Some players are not at the level many had hoped for while other things have crippled them, like injuries. Adding some free agents might not be the only option to add talent to Pittsburgh's roster, but they could explore some possibilities. There are some guys out there looking for their next opportunity.
Signing a free agent at this point of the year should provide small expectations if they get signed. They have probably been available to this point for a reason. The Steelers are at a moment right now where injuries are starting to pile up quickly. They could use some help, especially across the offense. Perhaps adding a player or two in free agency or off another team's practice squad would suffice.
A couple of free agents could be obvious choices for the Steelers
David Bakhtiari
Hopefully, Dylan Cook will be back at some point this season. He would be a nice boost to the depth at right tackle. The biggest concern is the lack of starting experience behind Broderick Jones and Dan Moore Jr. David Bakhtiari has a ton of starting experience and remains a free agent. Jones is playing poorly and someone like Bakhtiari could potentially push him for a starting job.
Injuries have always been something that hampered Bakhtiari's career, especially as of late. It was somewhat surprising that the long-time veteran couldn't find a home in free agency. He has plenty of accolades during his career, but he is still waiting for his next opportunity in the NFL. Bakhtiari suffered a knee injury early last season, so he should be healthy to go if the Steelers want to sign him.
Hunter Renfrow
Davante Adams will not be coming to Pittsburgh after all. He always wanted to reunite with Aaron Rodgers in the Jets organization. It is another trade failure by the Steelers as they still cannot provide answers at receiver. They might have to add one of the leftover free agents at some point. If a trade cannot be figured out, there are only a few options left who could be options to upgrade the team.
Hunter Renfrow remains out there to sign with any NFL club. He has fallen from grace rather quickly. Many saw him as one of the best route runners in the NFL just a couple of years ago. The Steelers need options at receiver, and Renfrow could provide a better choice. He has been a quality receiver in the past, and he can also provide some potential on special teams.
Brian Allen
Somewhat similar to Bakhtiari, Brian Allen also has an injury history that comes with his resume. Allen was primed to push for a role with the Browns this past preseason, but he suffered an injury. He was let go by the Browns and remains a free agent. His injury that occurred in July must be back to health as Allen reportedly worked out for the Saints in September. He could be a quality addition for Pittsburgh.
Even though Zach Frazier will only be out with injury for a few weeks, the Steelers are hurting at center. Right now, Ryan McCollum is preparing to start for the team, which could be disastrous. Allen has plenty of starting experience and could provide some flexibility at guard and center. He might not be as good of a player as he once was, but Allen would be an upgrade over McCollum.
