3 positions Steelers would be foolish not to bolster before training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally landed Aaron Rodgers, but his addition should only add more pressure to General Manager Omar Khan. He got the player he wanted to start at the quarterback position, but he must upgrade the roster around the veteran signal-caller. Rodgers being in the fold commands roster moves to provide better options for the gunslinger to have the best shot at success.

There are a handful of names still waiting for their next opportunity as free agents. Khan could also continue his investigative efforts on the trade market. Pittsburgh should have every avenue open if they wish to locate upgrades to their team. Rodgers pushes them back into playoff contention, even if their fan base disapproves.

Khan must find upgrades at key positions where they are currently struggling with their present iteration.

Offensive line

Steelers Nation has rejoiced with Broderick Jones sliding over to the left tackle position, but there are still underlying problems in the trenches. Pittsburgh has spent years trying to reestablish a quality offensive line, and this season will be its litmus test. It's a young group of starters besides Isaac Seumalo. They will have to sink or swim, but Khan can find a player or two to help this group.

Pittsburgh has prided itself on investing in the trenches in recent years, but there is a problem regarding depth.

They could use some help at either offensive tackle spot and reliable depth pieces in the interior of the offensive line. Expect Khan to review external options either as free agents or someone who might become available during final roster cuts.

Slot cornerback

It's an odd group at the cornerback position for the Steelers. They have starters in place, but they could use some help at the position. The slot cornerback role remains a red flag for the team. Khan hasn't been able to locate a quality option to upgrade from Beanie Bishop over the offseason. Donte Kent will battle for the starting spot, but he was a seventh-round pick by Pittsburgh this past spring.

The slot cornerback position remains a glaring hole on the roster as training camp gets closer.

Mike Hilton is one of several free agents that would make sense for the Black and Gold to consider. Jalen Ramsey was in recent trade rumors, but that appears like a dream scenario. Expect the Steelers to try to find an upgrade over Bishop and Kent if neither steps up for the title. Adding a free agent seems likeliest.

Receiver

Who knows if something changes between now and the start of training camp, but the Steelers might have to wait on adding a receiver. Pittsburgh remains in a bind since trading away George Pickens, and they seem ready to bet on Roman Wilson or Calvin Austin III to emerge from the depths. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place, and there might not be an answer by training camp.

Unless Khan lucks out and one of Wilson or Austin has a terrific preseason to become a starter, he must keep open lines of communication on the trade front. He should have every fishing rod in the water waiting for a bite. There will be receivers available between now and Week 1 of the regular season, which means the Steelers can land an upgrade if they aren't satisfied with their roster.
