After a hectic tampering period, the NFL landscape has seen plenty of movement. The Steelers made a splash by trading for DK Metcalf and signing a few key players, but their search for a quarterback remains a top priority for next season. Meanwhile, another pressing concern has emerged—the defensive line. With today’s release of Larry Ogunjobi, Pittsburgh freed up $7 million in cap space, but it also created a significant gap that needs to be addressed.

Given the current roster situation, it’s becoming increasingly likely that the Steelers will target a defensive lineman in the first round of the draft. However, one rookie won’t be enough to solidify the unit. To truly strengthen the defensive front, Pittsburgh will need to explore additional options in free agency. Here are some available defensive linemen the Steelers should consider pursuing.

Four defensive linemen the Pittsburgh Steelers should sign in free agency

Javon Hargrave, San Francisco 49ers

The most realistic option for the Steelers is a reunion with former defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Originally a third-round pick out of South Carolina State, Hargrave developed into a key contributor in Pittsburgh before departing in free agency to join the Eagles and later signing a lucrative deal with the 49ers in 2023. Unfortunately, his season was cut short after just three games last year due to a torn triceps, and San Francisco is now expected to release him.

At 32 years old and coming off a season-ending injury, Hargrave likely won’t have a massive market, making him an affordable and immediate starting option for the Steelers at defensive tackle. His return would also allow Keeanu Benton to shift to defensive end, strengthening Pittsburgh’s defensive front

Update: Javon Hargrave has agreed to contract terms with the Minnesota Vikings

Jonathan Allen, Washington Commanders

Jonathan Allen recently became a salary cap casualty, released by the Washington Commanders. As one of the premier defensive linemen available in free agency, he’s expected to attract considerable attention from teams across the league. The Pittsburgh Steelers, however, may hold a unique advantage: their defensive line coach, Karl Dunbar, previously coached Allen during his time at Alabama, creating a noteworthy link to monitor.

Should the Steelers secure Allen, their front seven would see an immediate upgrade. He brings a higher level of talent and consistency compared to Larry Ogunjobi, bolstering Pittsburgh’s defensive core. Pairing him with a first-round draft pick would not only offer flexibility in constructing the defensive line but also provide the incoming rookie with two seasoned veterans as mentors.

Update: Jonathan Allen has agreed to a three-year, $60 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings.

Derrick Nnadi, Kansas City Chiefs

Derrick Nnadi isn’t a headline starter, but he’d still be a smart pickup for the Steelers. Over seven seasons with the Chiefs, he’s proven himself as a dependable run-stopper—exactly the kind of player Pittsburgh could use to solidify its defensive front.

While he might re-sign with Kansas City on another modest contract like he did last year, the Steelers’ need for depth is glaring. Bringing Nnadi in on a budget-friendly deal to kick off the season would offer early stability, allowing younger players time to grow into larger roles as the year progresses.

Dre'mont Jones, Seattle Seahawks

Dre’Mont Jones out of Seattle could be an interesting target for the Steelers. Pittsburgh loves having versatile pieces on its defensive front, and Jones has shown he can handle multiple roles along the line. He’s not a bargain signing, and he’s not the classic run-stopper they might lean toward, but his skill set could still make a real difference for a defensive line that’s running thin. With depth being a pressing issue, Jones might be worth the investment if the Steelers are open to adding a more dynamic presence inside.
