5 Steelers who quietly won the first week of free agency

Pittsburgh's new additions may have bought these players some time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a busy first week of free agency, staying active as they added several quality players to strengthen the roster. While they addressed some key positions of need, other vacancies remain unfilled. Do not be surprised if general manager Omar Khan continues to add a few more free agents before shifting his full focus to the NFL Draft in April.

Pittsburgh added Michael Pittman Jr. through a sign-and-trade and followed that move by landing several headlining free agents, including Rico Dowdle, Jamel Dean, and Jaquan Brisker. The team also made additional signings, such as Sebastian Joseph-Day and Darnell Savage, to strengthen its depth chart.

It has been a busy start to free agency for Omar Khan, and while he is expected to remain active, major splash moves are likely over.

While the Steelers addressed holes across the roster, some lingering issues remain. There are still too many question marks on the depth chart that need to be resolved. However, uncertainty can create opportunities for unexpected contributors. The Steelers will likely continue addressing these needs in the NFL Draft, but for now, these players have gotten off to a terrific start this offseason.

These five Pittsburgh Steelers players are early winners after the first wave of free agency

Spencer Anderson, OG

Losing Isaac Seumalo leaves a significant void at left guard. Spencer Anderson could have an opportunity to compete for that role, especially if the Steelers choose to address the position primarily through the NFL Draft. A rookie could challenge Anderson for the job, but the veteran utility lineman may have the early advantage.

With no major additions at the position in free agency, Anderson appears to have a legitimate path to earning a starting spot.

Patrick Queen, LB

Many viewed Patrick Queen as a potential cap casualty heading into free agency. Trade speculation followed as free agents came off the board, yet Queen is still with the team. The Steelers appear to be flexible with his future. If he stays for another season, the team is comfortable with that. If they can secure solid trade value, that's even better. His role is not guaranteed, but not in jeopardy.

Will Howard, QB

Aaron Rodgers remains unsigned as other free agent quarterbacks continue to find new homes. Pittsburgh appears willing to wait on Rodgers or move forward with Will Howard as the starter next season. While the Steelers have fallback options available in both the draft and free agency, they once again find themselves in a holding pattern as they wait for Rodgers’ decision. Howard has received significant praise within the organization, but that optimism could backfire.

Malik Harrison, LB

Aside from Patrick Queen, Malik Harrison appeared to be an obvious cap casualty for the Steelers.

However, the team lost several key special-teams contributors, which may explain why Harrison has remained on the roster. While the Steelers did not find clear replacements for those special teams roles in free agency, Harrison’s job is far from secure. Expect the club to add a linebacker capable of competing for a starting role, forcing Harrison to earn his roster spot once training camp arrives.

Pat Freiermuth, TE

Few players in Pittsburgh have enjoyed a better start to the offseason than Pat Freiermuth. With Connor Heyward departing in free agency and Smith released, Freiermuth is positioned for a significant increase in targets this season. While the Steelers should still add a tight end to bolster the depth chart, Freiermuth is clearly the top passing option at the position on the roster.
