There is growing trade speculation about the Pittsburgh Steelers holding significant trade interest in wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The New York Jets playmaker might be hitting the trade block, and he could be a blockbuster addition for the Black and Gold before the deadline passes on November 10. The bad news is that Aaron Rodgers and Wilson could have some unresolved beef between them.
Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson played together on the New York Jets during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. For those who forget, Rodgers missed the majority of the 2023 campaign due to injury, and the 2024 season saw Rodgers and Wilson butt heads. They had some spats on the sideline during games and in practice.
Both have brushed those rumors away, but there has always been speculation of a rift between the wide receiver and quarterback.
Wilson even confirmed in September of last year that he and Rodgers had not spoken since the future Hall of Famer left New York and joined the Steelers. There might not be as big an issue between the two players as people have reported, but it is certainly something to monitor. If Pittsburgh is truly interested in acquiring Wilson from the Jets, they'd be foolish to pull the trigger if Rodgers isn't excited about it.
Past beef between Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson could ruin Pittsburgh Steelers trade plans
Perhaps the funniest thing about this, if the rumors of this ongoing rift are true, is that Garrett Wilson had the best season of his career with Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterback in 2024. The young wideout produced some great numbers. In 17 games that year, Wilson put up 1,104 receiving yards on 101 receptions and seven touchdowns.
That would be an incredible upgrade in production for Pittsburgh if the Steelers got something similar out of the duo.
Going into the bye week, the Steelers' leading receiver is DK Metcalf, even though he has been a disappointment as a whole. He's only produced 374 yards and one touchdown. Which is less than what Wilson has done with a more boring Jets offense. The potential Steelers trade target has already put up 527 yards and three touchdowns to this point in the campaign.
Landing Wilson via trade would likely cost the Steelers their first-round pick, and potentially more. The wide receiver is still young and under contract through the 2030 season. It makes sense to consider that high trade price if the Black and Gold truly envision him as their missing piece on offense. That being said, if Aaron Rodgers doesn't like the idea, that move could go south in a hurry.
Although it is a nice pipe dream to consider the skill of Wilson on the Steelers' offense to help boost them to new heights, a lot of hurdles would need to be cleared.
Rodgers and Wilson's past rift could put many wrinkles into this trade plan. Unless both appear comfortable playing with each other this season, the trade could become a giant distraction. This might be one the team cannot risk, since this move would come at a lucrative price.
