Will it ever stop? Pittsburgh Steelers fans would like to get through NFL Draft weekend without hearing about Aaron Rodgers. But somehow, the divisive quarterback manages to make his way back into the rumor mill.
The Steelers were scrutinized for passing on Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders when they were on the clock with the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster, Pittsburgh has the worst quarterback situation in the league, and landing Sanders could have been the swing they needed.
But the latest news suggests why the Steelers may have passed on Shedeur.
Just hours before the start of Day 2 of the draft, Dianna Russini of The Athletic claims that the Steelers and Rodgers continue to be in discussions about joining the team.
"The Steelers and Aaron Rodgers are continuing to maintain dialogue as the team waits on the future Hall of Famer’s free agency decision, a source tells me," Russini posted on X. "No timetable has been set by either side."
The Pittsburgh Steelers can't count on Aaron Rodgers to commit
The Pittsburgh Steelers should wash their hands of Aaron Rodgers at this point. After Rodgers' recent comments on The Pat McAfee Show, it sounded like the 41-year-old quarterback was nowhere near committing to playing football in 2025, let alone for Pittsburgh.
While it's probably true that the Steelers and Rodgers are in talks, the Steelers can't proceed in the NFL Draft as if he's going to be on the roster this year unless he physically signs the contract that's in place. With just two quarterbacks on the roster, Pittsburgh needs to do something to fill the void in the draft. This doesn't have to be a big swing for the future, but they at least need depth and a QB on a rookie contract.
Perhaps Rodgers' ears perked up when the Steelers passed on Shedeur Sanders. Maybe with enough job security, he could finally commit to a one-year deal. But probably not. I wouldn't read too deeply into the Aaron Rodgers drama, as it simply feels like more of the same that we've dealt with for the past two months.
