The Pittsburgh Steelers' second day of training camp was cut short due to inclement weather, but that didn't stop the team from having a strong overall day in Latrobe. New starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers had an impressive showing after a concerning start to his first practice, and it helped the Steelers' offense improve upon a mediocre start to camp Thursday.
Rodgers was at his best during the fan-favorite seven shots drill, where the offense and defense square off for seven plays from the two-yard line. It is one of the more "real" football drills we see this early in camp, even without pads on.
It wasn't just that the former MVP had a good showing in the drill, but it's who he connected with that is a great sign of where the offense is heading.
Aaron Rodgers connects with Pittsburgh Steelers' top targets early in training camp
During seven shots, the offense won the drill 4-3, thanks to some key plays from Rodgers connecting with DK Metcalf and Pat Freiermuth. His first touchdown was a beautiful out route from Metcalf, easily beating fellow newcomer Darius Slay.
The offense and defense traded blows until it was 3-3, with Rodgers coming back in to try and win it for the offense. He did just that, firing a pass to the flat to Freiermuth for the drill-winning score.
While the plays were nothing too special, they both relied on timing and being on the same page. That is going to be important for Rodgers, as he expects all of his targets to be able to adjust on the fly to things he sees the defense doing. Seeing signs of that chemistry after just two days of training camp is impressive.
After years of disappointing play from Steelers' quarterbacks, it's hard not to get excited for what Rodgers could be for this team in 2025. He may no longer be the All-Pro he was in his prime, but early signs suggest that he still has enough left in the tank to lead Pittsburgh to a successful 2025 season.
