It's been a busy couple of days for the Steelers, who added talent to their roster during the early portion of free agency. Pittsburgh had high hopes, but their favorite football team has brought mixed results. The D.K. Metcalf trade looks genius, but the club struggles to find an answer at the quarterback position. They should get clarity there soon.
Rumors continue to swirl as countless free agents search for their landing spots. Most top names available have found new employment, but that doesn't mean all quality options are off the table. Expect Steelers general manager Omar Khan to remain active in free agency as he does his best to improve their roster.
They have enough cap space left in the bank if they wish to make some more splash signings.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could target these best remaining players in free agency
J.K. Dobbins, Running back
Najee Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. It was a costly one-year deal, which Pittsburgh wasn't willing to offer. Ever since the Steelers declined Harris' fifth-year option, it seemed clear he would leave as a free agent. Jaylen Warren remains on the roster, but he is best suited to be in a tandem at the running back position.
Expect Khan and Mike Tomlin to investigate the running back market in free agency. Perhaps they could find J.K. Dobbins as a suitable option who wouldn't break the bank on a long-term contract. They could always target the draft, which is overflowing with talent. Dobbins is coming off a strong season, but his injury history could make him a gamble if you offer too much on a deal.

Tyler Lockett, Wide receiver
The Steelers already added Metcalf, so why not consider adding his former teammate? Tyler Lockett was included in trade rumors surrounding Pittsburgh this past year. Nothing ever materialized, but adding Metcalf might not be their only addition to the receiving core. Maybe they take another receiver during the draft, or they could sign someone.
If Pittsburgh decides to bring Russell Wilson back, bringing Lockett aboard makes more sense. Metcalf and George Pickens have massive personalities, so having a leader like this free agent on the roster would be beneficial. Lockett remains one of the better route runners in the game at his advanced age. He shouldn't break the bank and could provide leadership and a starting option.
Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback
Who will be the Steelers starting quarterback in 2025?
Everyone in Pittsburgh is dying to know the answer to this question. Most rumors point to Aaron Rodgers being a one-year starter for the team. The organization still believes they are one quarterback away from postseason success. Bringing Wilson back makes no sense, but adding a toxic personality like Rodgers to a group of Metcalf and Pickens could make things worse.
It would be shocking if Rodgers or Wilson didn't become their starter for this upcoming campaign. Expect the Steelers to continue contract talks with Rodgers as they hope to sign him. In an ideal scenario, they win a playoff game with Rodgers, which is reminiscent of when Brett Farve played with the Vikings. They would hopefully move up in the 2026 draft to take their next franchise quarterback.
