Blockbuster trade idea lands Steelers a game-breaking offensive weapon

This would get fans pumped up before the start of the NFL season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made not one, but two blockbuster trades during the 2025 offseason. Is there room for a third before the start of Week 1? A to Z Sports seems to think so. Since early in the offseason, trade rumors have swirled around All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and the lethal offensive weapon could be on the move... at the right price, of course.

Kyle Crabbs of A to Z Sports recently collected four hypothetical trade proposals from his colleagues. Given the choice between them, Crabbs would take the offer from the Steelers.

This hypothetical trade proposal would involve Pittsburgh sending a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and wide receiver Calvin Austin III to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Tyreek Hill and a 2026 fifth-round pick.

The proposed idea would have the Dolphins and Steelers executing this trade after August 31, with Miami paying Hill's $15.8 million option bonus.

Financially, both parties can make this trade work. The Steelers have an estimated $19.2 million in salary cap space, and Hill has a base salary of just $10 million this season, if the Dolphins were to pick up his $1.8 million per game option bonus. This may require Pittsburgh's front office to rework his contract and push money into the future.

But assuming they worked out the financial details, would this hypothetical trade for Tyreek Hill be worth it?

The Pittsburgh Steelers shouldn't jeopardize the future to trade for Tyreek Hill

In the NFL, it's all about capitalizing on windows. So far, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been able to toe the line between giving themselves a legitimate shot to compete in 2025 and still hanging onto their elite draft capital in 2026. Though adding Hill to the roster would make this offense better, it wouldn't be worth jeopardizing their chances of future success.

Despite starting all 17 games in 2024, Hill is coming off a season in which he managed just 56.4 receiving yards per game (959 on the year). The 31-year-old has showcased ground-breaking speed over the years, and while he's still fast, he may finally be starting to lose a step.

Not only is it a gamble that Hill would return to the player he was two years ago, but the Steelers would also be taking a gamble that Aaron Rodgers can look like the player we saw in Green Bay 4-5 seasons ago. While Rodgers is the only hope for the Steelers in 2025, it may prove to not be enough to compete with the top dogs in the AFC.

What we know for certain is that the Pittsburgh Steelers need to look for a legitimate franchise quarterback in 2026, and trading away top draft capital isn't going to help them land the player they need.

Instead of trading a second-round pick, a future third-round pick, and Calvin Austin III for Hill, the Steelers could take a more patient approach and see how things go before the November 4 trade deadline. Hill is an aging receiver who comes with his share of drama. The Steelers should pass on this trade opportunity if given the chance.
