Bold prediction: Steelers struggle to get a win vs. Giants in primetime
Mike Tomlin has failed against bad opponents throughout his long stint with the Steelers. Everyone in Pittsburgh knows that when a bad team comes to town, don't expect many blowouts to happen. Each organization in the NFL has talented players, but in some clubs, you are supposed to dominate. Maybe this game against the Giants will differ, but don't count on it.
There might not be a worse team in the league than the Giants. They have a bunch of problems all over their roster. It looks like a team who are about ready to tap the reset button once against. New York is begging for relevant football, but it seems like it might be further away than their fans would hope for. The Steelers might not go up against weaker opposition this season.
Pittsburgh knows better than to look over an opponent, but their football club has continuously done it in the past. The fact that they have a bye week following this matchup only heightens the concern about this potentially becoming an upset for the home team.
The Steelers should win this game rather easily, but every fan of the black and gold knows this could be a tight contest until the end.
Steelers will make things tougher than they need to be against Giants
Let's break down how this game could become a nail-biter or even a potential loss for the Steelers. Daniel Jones has been terrible over the past three games for the Giants, but he still has plenty of weapons to throw to on offense. He has some skilled and young receivers who can take advantage of certain coverages the Steelers like to show. He could dink and dunk his way down the field off of quick passes.
Turnovers are going to be huge in this battle. Whichever team produces more will have a tremendous chance of winning. Pittsburgh's defense has been terrific at turning the ball over, and on the surface, it seems like Jones will keep their trend going. Don't rule out Russell Wilson turning the ball over. New York has a quality defensive front that could force some bad decisions by Wilson.
Besides turnovers, pressure, and success on the ground will be the name of the game for the Steelers. If they can run the ball effectively all game, then it will open the passing game up. It will in turn slow down the Giants pass rushers. It will kill the clock and allow their defense a chance to catch their breath to attack Jones and company on the following possession.
If the Giants can cause disruption upfront for most of the game and set up their offense with a turnover or two, then they will be in the thick of this game. We know the Steelers have routinely overlooked opponents like the Giants in the past, so don't assume this will be an easy win. The black and gold have plenty leaning their way going into this game, but New York could play spoiler.
