The Cleveland Browns are currently going through a lot following their trade of star defender Myles Garrett, but one Browns reporter recently found time to give the Pittsburgh Steelers somewhat of a suggestion. During a Friday episode of Baskin & Phelps, on 92.3 The Fan, the hosts were discussing Baker Mayfield and his ongoing contract negotiations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While exploring the possibility of Mayfield finding a new team, Browns reporter Daryl Ruiter said he knows just the team for the veteran quarterback. The team was Pittsburgh, with Ruiter saying, “I think Baker going to the Steelers would be delicious.”
While that’s a storyline that would certainly feed the Cleveland media because of Mayfield’s history with the Browns, it’s a move not many Pittsburgh fans would want to see. Unfortunately, it’s the exact kind of move the Steelers would make.
Pittsburgh Steelers suggested as a landing spot for Baker Mayfield
Mayfield is no stranger to the AFC North, as he was drafted first overall by the Browns back in 2018. The veteran quarterback provided Cleveland with some rare stability at the QB spot and even led the Browns to a playoff win over Pittsburgh in the 2020 season. However, his relationship with the team deteriorated, and he was eventually traded, as Cleveland moved forward with Deshaun Watson.
That didn’t work for the Browns, but it did for Mayfield, as he bounced through a couple of teams before finding a home in Tampa Bay. Mayfield has had a productive stint starting for the Buccaneers the last three seasons, and he insists that he wants to be there long-term. However, he said on Friday that he and the Bucs aren’t close on a new contract, and 2026 is the final year of his current deal.
If Mayfield can’t figure things out with Tampa Bay, he will be looking for a new team, and the Steelers are absolutely the kind of team that would sign him. Pittsburgh has consistently proven that it will commit to an older quarterback, even if they aren’t at the top of their game, and Mayfield could be next in line.
Even if Mayfield is still a solid starter, fans would hate him being added to the Steelers' lineup because he would likely perpetuate a cycle of mediocrity. The Steelers have been stuck as a team that is just good enough to make the playoffs and get booted in the first round, and Mayfield probably won’t change that. For that reason, Pittsburgh fans will hope this move remains just an idea.
