What’s more exciting than the start of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp? That’s easy - an excited DK Metcalf. The two-time Pro-Bowler entered his second training camp at St. Vincent Latrobe College this week, displaying optimism from ear to ear. His excitement and positivity towards the franchise’s new chapter were refreshing to see.
It was also another reminder of how culture change can become the catalyst for a breakout campaign.
The excitement behind Mike McCarthy’s reign as Pittsburgh’s man in charge is not a facade. On Monday, players met with the media to discuss the expectations for the season. And offensive innovations became a revolving topic. When Metcalf addressed the topic, his words stuck like gum under a desk.
“I think the biggest difference for me is it's an offensive coach,” Metcalf admitted. “That’s the first time I’ve had that in my career.” The fun fact felt like a revelation. Pete Carroll was Metcalf’s head coach for the first four years of his career. Then Mike Macdonald (2024) and Mike Tomlin (2025).
Now, McCarthy is in charge of his development. The seasoned Head Coach has a history of assisting primary threats elevate. Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, and Jordy Nelson were among the first to experience the benefits of his system. Then came Davante Adams and, more recently, CeeDee Lamb.
A scheme requiring timing concepts, multiple formations and versatility will only increase Metcalf’s utilization.

A partnership with his new head coach isn’t the only connection growing deeper. A chance to bunk with Aaron Rodgers in consecutive camps is helping the two veterans work on communication.
“I think since he was 50 years old and I was ten, we were trying to get used to the dynamic of things,” Metcalf said jokingly. “I think right now our communication is far beyond where it was last year when we first got to camp. I think that was the biggest difference from last year, and I think it’s only going to continue to go.“
And hopefully it translates to the field.
If there was ever a time for DK Metcalf to have an explosive season, it’s now. Sure, the former second-round pick has established a respected reputation in the NFL. But we know the league is a “what have you done for me lately” environment. And Pittsburgh’s primary target hasn’t turned heads in quite some time.
An impressive showing in 2023 earned Metcalf his most recent Pro Bowl nod. Since then, he’s been reliable, but not as productive compared to a guy like Ja’Mar Chase - who’s considered the best wideout in the AFC North.
Asking Metcalf to earn more keep isn’t disrespectful. His 850 receiving yards and eight touchdowns last campaign should be considered an appetizer to his Pittsburgh career.
And fans have a starved appetite.
It would be huge for this to be Metcalf’s breakout year during a season beginning with intrigue. I believe the energy is there. Excitement surrounding Rodgers and McCarthy’s innovations is refreshing. And I believe it will be a breath of fresh air for Metcalf.
